We’ve always loved the Back to the Future movies (who doesn’t?), so when the stage musical version landed in London’s West End, it immediately went on our must see list. After keeping an eye on ticket prices through a few theatre apps, I struck gold on TodayTix , they were running a special offer and I managed to grab front row seats for just £55 each. Bargain! Since it was already on our summer holiday to do list, it felt like fate.
First Impressions
I’ll admit, part of me wondered how a musical could ever live up to the iconic films. The story, the characters, the DeLorean… those are pretty big shoes to fill. But from the very first note, I knew we were in for something special! It didn’t disappoint for a second.
The Story & Cast
The musical follows the storyline of the first film: Marty McFly gets accidentally transported back to 1955 thanks to his eccentric scientist friend, Doc Brown. On the night we saw it, Marty was played by Ellis Kirk, and Doc by Cory English. Both were absolutely brilliant! Ellis captured Marty’s energy and charm perfectly, while Cory had the whole audience in stitches with his hilarious, larger than life Doc Brown.
The DeLorean & Special Effects
Now let’s talk about the DeLorean. Honestly, one of my biggest questions going in was: how on earth are they going to pull that off on stage? I won’t give away spoilers, but wow… they do it justice, and then some! The special effects throughout the show are unlike anything I’ve ever seen in theatre. From lightning striking the clock tower to being completely transported to Hill Valley, it’s visually jaw dropping.
Of course, a musical lives and dies by its score and this one shines. It blends fantastic new songs written for the stage with the iconic favourites we all know and love, including Back in Time and The Power of Love. The moment the overture kicked in with that legendary Back to the Future theme, I honestly got goosebumps. There’s something magical about hearing a live orchestra, and this one is phenomenal.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the movies or just love great theatre, Back to the Future: The Musical is a must-see. It captures everything that made the film so iconic while adding fresh, spectacular stage magic. We laughed, we cheered, we sang along and we left the Adelphi grinning from ear to ear.
If you’re thinking of going, keep an eye out for deals (TodayTix is definitely worth checking). Sitting in the front row for £55 made the whole experience even more unforgettable.
Rating: 5/5 – Great Scott, it’s brilliant!
