Tonight, we had the absolute privilege of being invited to attend the opening night of Bring It On, staged by The Kings School of Performing Arts (KSPA) at the Kings Theatre in Southsea.
I’ll admit - I haven’t actually seen the film version, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. But knowing it was a KSPA production, I had a good feeling it was going to be something special. I wasn’t wrong!
The story centres around Campbell, played brilliantly by Ella Burgos, who is all set to lead her school’s cheer squad to victory — until a scheme by frenemy Eva (Jemima Rees) has her redistricted to Jackson High, a rougher inner-city school that doesn’t even have a cheerleading team. Horrified but determined, Campbell convinces Jackson’s dance crew leader, Danielle (played by the amazing Meli Boukhemma), to start a new squad and take on the cheer world. As she forms new friendships and navigates cultural clashes, Campbell learns that integrity means more than winning.
The entire cast is absolutely exceptional, each performer having a moment to shine. The energy is electric from start to finish! The choreography and cheer routines are genuinely breathtaking — high-flying, precise, and packed with personality. You simply can’t take your eyes off the stage.
Ella Burgos is pitch-perfect as the all-American Campbell, and her on-stage chemistry with Meli Boukhemma’s strong, grounded Danielle makes for a powerful dynamic. Their scenes together are heartfelt, humorous, and utterly captivating.
A few standout performances include Georgie Parsons as the loveable underdog Bridget — completely endearing — and Jeanne Kamakoue, who brings style and flair to the role of Nautica.
It was also a real treat to see Stanley Searl again, after a great performance in Legally Blonde earlier this year. This time, Stanley takes on a more prominent role, portraying the trans character La Cienega with grace, confidence, and style — a truly memorable performance.
Beyond the phenomenal cast, the show features jaw-dropping choreography, impressive cheer stunts, and sky-high kicks that rival any professional production. The costumes and set design are slick and vibrant, and yes — there were even pyrotechnics!
Our Verdict
Bring It On at the Kings Theatre is a feel-good, high-energy celebration of youth, talent, and teamwork. More than just a theatre school production, it’s a polished, professional showcase of local performers backed by a brilliant creative team. With its infectious music, stunning routines, and sincere heart, this show leaves you grinning from ear to ear.
If you’re lucky enough to catch it (though sadly it finishes tomorrow), prepare to have the best time. We can’t wait to see what KSPA does next!
Bring It On is at The Kings Theatre, Southsea until Saturday 26th July.
