Last night, we were invited to the press/gala night of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Kings Theatre and honestly, we’re still smiling about it!
If you’re searching for family-friendly things to do in Portsmouth or the perfect theatre trip in Hampshire, this production should be right at the top of your list.
This in-house production proves once again just how incredible local talent can be. Having seen several of the Kings Theatre’s homegrown shows before, we had high expectations and they didn’t just meet them, they exceeded them!
We all know and love the story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Whether it’s from the original book or the iconic film starring Dick Van Dyke, it’s a tale that holds a special place in so many hearts. Taking on something this beloved is no easy task but the Kings Theatre has absolutely nailed it.
A Cast That Shines From Start to Finish
From the moment the curtain rises, you’re rooting for Paul Clements’ Caractacus Potts and his delightfully bonkers inventions. Peter Colley as Grandpa Potts brings plenty of laughs, while Logan Briant and Daniel Deboo as Jemima and Jeremy completely stole the show! The level of talent at such a young age is incredible!
Stephanie Aves as Truly Scrumptious is everything you’d hope for graceful, elegant, and full of spirit, with just the right amount of sass.
A standout moment comes from Shaun Williamson, best known for EastEnders, who takes on the dual roles of Lord Scrumptious and the Toymaker. Switching seamlessly between two very different characters, he brings humour, charm, and real stage presence. It was also announced on the night that he is now the first patron of Portsmouth Theatres, following the partnership between the Kings Theatre and Theatre Royal.
Villains, Laughs & Just the Right Amount of Spook!
The Baron and Baroness Bomburst played by John Bettesworth and Andee Jordan are an absolute joy! Every scene they’re in is laugh out loud funny, and honestly, we wanted more! Andee dazzled us last year in Annie, and she’s just as unforgettable here.
Curtis McLennan and Ben Irish as Boris and Goran bring fantastic comic timing, while Matt Gibbins’ Child Catcher delivers just the right level of creepy enough to thrill the audience without being too much for younger viewers.
The Moment Everyone Will Be Talking About…
We have to talk about the car. Because WOW.
Chitty herself is nothing short of magical. The way she’s brought to life on stage is incredible but the real jaw-dropping moment? She flies. Yes, actually flies...right out over the audience! It’s one of those theatre moments that gives you goosebumps and leaves little (and big!) faces completely amazed.
A Must-See Family Show in Portsmouth
From the stunning sets to the dazzling costumes, every detail of this production has been carefully thought out. It’s colourful, energetic, heartwarming, and packed full of nostalgia.
If you’re looking for things to do with kids in Hampshire, a family theatre show in Portsmouth, or simply a feel-good night out, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ticks every box.
The show runs at the Kings Theatre until Sunday 19th April, with tickets starting from just £15 making it an affordable treat for families too.
Wholesome, magical, and full of fun and we highly recommend it!
