Aladdin at the Kings Theatre Portsmouth – Our Press Night Review

Published on 10 December 2025 at 19:58

We were lucky enough to be invited to the press night of Aladdin at the Kings Theatre Portsmouth this evening, and honestly… I’m still so dazzled I’m not quite sure where to begin! Everyone who follows our family adventures knows how much we adore the Kings, but there is something uniquely magical about the Pompey Panto every single year. And this year’s offering didn’t just deliver that magic, it sprinkled it absolutely everywhere.

The show was everything we’ve come to expect and then some. Sparkling costumes, big belly laughs, that unmistakable community warmth, and of course the moments of pure chaos that make a panto what it is. So, where to begin? Let’s start with the cast…

A Cast Packed with Pompey Panto Greatness

Jack Edwards – Widow Twankey

This year’s cast sees the return of Pompey Panto royalty: Jack Edwards as the incomparable Widow Twankey. Now entering his 11th year at the Kings, and honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way! No one plays a dame quite like Jack, a Kings panto without him is simply unimaginable. Somehow he seemed even funnier this year, delivering joke after joke, costume after costume, and of course the return of Man Cam.

And yes, the 12 Days of Christmas loo roll chaos made its triumphant comeback… if you know, you know!

Jacob Bailey – PC World

Talking of home-grown talent, we were thrilled to see the wonderful Jacob Bailey return as PC World. Jacob was hilarious from start to finish and it was lovely seeing him back after his simply iconic performance as Caroline the Cat in last year’s panto.

We did miss his dancing though so Jacob, if you happen to read this, more dancing next year please!

A Baddie to Boo and a Familiar Face

Of course, every panto needs a villain we can gleefully boo, and this year the role is taken on by Shaun Williamson, known to so many of us as Barry from EastEnders. Shaun fits this type of character so well, leaning into the pantomime villain energy with real style.

Naturally, having “Barry” on the stage means plenty of Janine jokes… which became extra hilarious in our row because my name Actually IS Janine. Poor Mason was entirely puzzled as he's a bit young to be familiar with EastEnders and it gave us a good giggle.
For the record ...I didn’t push anyone off a cliff, I swear!

Wishee Washee – A Comedy Highlight

And of course, it wouldn’t be Aladdin without Wishee Washee, played brilliantly by Joe Pollard. His comedy timing is spot on, and he bounces off the legendary energy of Jack Edwards perfectly. The comic rhythm between them adds to the real genius of this year’s show… honestly, it might just be the funniest one yet!

Rustie Lee – Pure Genie Magic

In the role of the Genie of the Lamp was the utterly wonderful Rustie Lee. What can you say about Rustie that hasn’t already been said? She is simply gorgeous in every sense. An absolute delight to watch and let's face it .....a genuine national treasure!

Her pairing with Esme Bowdler, who brings so much energy and sparkle to the stage, was a surprising duo we never knew we needed. Together they were pure joy, the embodiment of girl power wrapped in glitter and humour.

A Love Story to Root For

Leo Albad shines as Aladdin the perfect casting for the cheeky, street-smart rogue with a heart of gold. Paired with Leonie Wall’s beautiful and graceful Princess Jasmine, the show balances its big comedic moments with a lovely dose of “awww” factor. Their scenes together give just the right amount of fairytale charm.

Festive Fun for All — We Loved It

We loved this Panto. I challenge anyone to leave the theatre anything but festive after this. We laughed, we sang along, we cheered and yes, we even dodged flying loo rolls (if you know, you know!).

If you’re looking for a super fun, full-on, Christmasy night out for all the family this is the one.

Special mention (but absolutely no spoilers): Kudos to the amazing special effects by the team behind the scenes. One moment in particular will stay with us long after the curtain falls. Go and see it to find out!

Final Thoughts

This year’s Aladdin at the Kings Theatre is a must-see. Warm, brilliant, silly and full of sparkle! It's one of those shows that brings families together, makes grown-ups laugh like children, and sends you home feeling all festive inside.
Get your tickets while there’s still time. We can’t wait for next year but until then, long live the #PompeyPanto magic!

The show runs from 5 December to 31 December 2025. Tickets start from £10!
